I just got done reading a piece from Active Transportatin Alliance regarding Chicago's privatization of it's parking meters:http://lwaysintransit.typepad.com/hyde_park_urbanist/2009/06/active-trans-on-the-parking-meter-lease.htmlIt bemoans the fact that the city has given up control of it's meters for what I can only imagine is in the name of generating revenue. I agree with the Active Transportation Alliance. Parking spaces are to be managed and not looked on a golden cow. The best way to generate revenue is to recognize that parking meters are a tool like any other in municipalities tool box. Sometimes covering a meter and giving free parking might generate more money. Sometimes reserving a parking meter for a special event will allow a patron to spend more money directly. But the city won't be able to do any sort of baging of meters because they've given up control.
