Volley Ball and Basketball on the Prairie! We just finished reflooring the hay mow of our barn and have made the conversion to a sewing loft. We’re really excited! Not only do be have 2,000 more square feet for sewing projects we also have added precious space for the boys. And in Minnesota in the dead of winter 2000 square feet of additional space is heaven. We’re going to continue working on lower half of the barn with thoughts of eventually moving our screen printing operation into it or expanding our sewing.

This what we see outside our door this spring. Living out here we’re luckier than most. We have a tar road just about 20 yards from the entrance to the driveway. It’s always a running joke at CanvasWork. When spring comes it always comes in melting snow and lots of mud and our tables always seem to have an order of white canvas hoods or white seed pallet covers. My boys really love the mud though.

My family loves living up in North Western, Minnesota. At any given moment I can look up from my sewing machine and see a small herd of deer feeding on the edge of the corn field out my window. I can look up and see a bald eagle perched on a red oak in our wood grove hunting that same field in hay. He’s waiting for the farmer to cut a large swath and expose a field mouse or rabbit. There is a relationship between the work of my eyes and finglers as the walking foot of my sewing machine stitches a seam between my fingers and the way that deer and eagle are attentive to their own subsistence. Wendell Berry in “Solving for Pattern” is luminous in seeing these patterns. He’s incredible. I’ve got a pictuer that shows the slow solution of my workspace. Up on the scaffolding are my neighbors siding a barn built by the same three generations earlier. The money earned to pay them came from a local order for barn curtains. There is a beautiful symmetry. Between the eye and embroidery is the stitch and the stitch and the stitch…

Welcome everyone to CanvasWork! My wife and I and our two children live in Northern Minnesota where it is beautiful and cold… as you can see by the picture. But were excited about launching our new website and blog. We are also very excited about adding an additional 2000 square feet of work space in what was our barn’s hay mow. This will allow us to make larger projects and it will also allow my family to play a lot of basketball. Which is also extremely important when you are snow bound. I look forward to talking to you all on a regular basis and to keep you up to date on all our renovations and projects.

Cheers!
